The Starfish Story

A wise man was taking a sunrise walk on the beach...

In the distance he caught sight of a little girl who seemed to be dancing along the waves. As he got closer, he saw the little girl picking up starfish from the sand and tossing them gently back into the ocean.

“What are you doing?” the wise man asked?

“The sun is coming up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them in, they’ll die.”

“But little girl, there are miles and miles of beach with starfish all along the way, you can’t possibly make a difference.”

The little girl bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it lovingly back into the ocean past the breaking waves, “It made a difference to that one.” She replied.

Help to Relieve Hunger in the Community

The number of families in our communities relying more and more on food pantries and food assistance is growing every year. Many working poor families, because of the increase in other living expenses, sickness or loss of employment have to rely on assistance through food pantries. Any program that would help to relieve hunger, or help to increase the efficiency of food pantry programs would be very beneficial.

Possible Programs

  1. Ask gardeners and other members of the community to plant a row for the hungry, locally. This could be done by gardeners of course, but could also be a very good project for children in school or at home so they could participate in helping the hungry in the community.
  2. Visit a local food pantry, publicize the good work they do and take specific steps to help them.
  3. Organize a program to distribute surplus foods to families or food banks.
  4. Sponsor events or create programs to provide food for pantries.
