The Starfish Story

A wise man was taking a sunrise walk on the beach...

In the distance he caught sight of a little girl who seemed to be dancing along the waves. As he got closer, he saw the little girl picking up starfish from the sand and tossing them gently back into the ocean.

“What are you doing?” the wise man asked?

“The sun is coming up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them in, they’ll die.”

“But little girl, there are miles and miles of beach with starfish all along the way, you can’t possibly make a difference.”

The little girl bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it lovingly back into the ocean past the breaking waves, “It made a difference to that one.” She replied.

Children and Philanthropy

Young people today are very community minded. They want to build a life over and above just making a living and are very anxious to help in the community and are very strong and supportive of a cause that they believe in. Working individually or in small groups they can make a difference.

Possible Programs

  1. Join with a group of local students providing the seed money and with other volunteers carryout a specific project or idea that will be beneficial in the community.
  2. Offer grants of seed money to students in the amount of $100 (or more) to do a charitable project in the community chosen by them.
  3. Organize an event to recognize a young person who has helped others.
  4. Organize a fundraising event for a local charity using young people as participants.
