The Starfish Story

A wise man was taking a sunrise walk on the beach...

In the distance he caught sight of a little girl who seemed to be dancing along the waves. As he got closer, he saw the little girl picking up starfish from the sand and tossing them gently back into the ocean.

“What are you doing?” the wise man asked?

“The sun is coming up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them in, they’ll die.”

“But little girl, there are miles and miles of beach with starfish all along the way, you can’t possibly make a difference.”

The little girl bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it lovingly back into the ocean past the breaking waves, “It made a difference to that one.” She replied.

Children Living in Poverty

In the United States today there are 12 million children living in poverty, many of them going to bed hungry each night. It includes one in four children under the age of three and many of these children have hurdles to success from poor nutrition, lack of school supplies and books, or other obstacles to their education and successful lives. Anything you can do to enrich the lives of these children can really make a difference.

Possible Programs

  1. Collect material goods such as school supplies, or winter coats, or pre-owned toys or sports equipment to be distributed to some of these children.
  2. Organize and install one or more family backyard playgrounds for children to enjoy.
  3. Plan a special day or a special event for some children living in poverty.
  4. Organize a group in the community to help children in various ways.
