The Starfish Story

A wise man was taking a sunrise walk on the beach...

In the distance he caught sight of a little girl who seemed to be dancing along the waves. As he got closer, he saw the little girl picking up starfish from the sand and tossing them gently back into the ocean.

“What are you doing?” the wise man asked?

“The sun is coming up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them in, they’ll die.”

“But little girl, there are miles and miles of beach with starfish all along the way, you can’t possibly make a difference.”

The little girl bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it lovingly back into the ocean past the breaking waves, “It made a difference to that one.” She replied.

13. Prevention of Substance Abuse by Children

Prevention of Substance Abuse by Children

In the United States over 3,000 children begin smoking each day. Each day in America 1,200 people die from smoking related illnesses. Tobacco is the first “gateway drug,” it is where addicts usually start and alcohol, inhalants and marijuana are the next gateway drugs. One-half of all youth deaths are alcohol related. The behaviors in life are shaped for children usually between the ages of 10 to 14.

Possible Programs

  1. Publish and distribute information on the dangers of smoking and other drug use.
  2. Sponsor role models or athletes to talk to children on dangers of drug abuse.
  3. Create a community resource center for children and parents with information on drug abuse and the warning signs.
  4. Organize a school club or group to help children avoid the use of drugs.
