The Starfish Story

A wise man was taking a sunrise walk on the beach...

In the distance he caught sight of a little girl who seemed to be dancing along the waves. As he got closer, he saw the little girl picking up starfish from the sand and tossing them gently back into the ocean.

“What are you doing?” the wise man asked?

“The sun is coming up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them in, they’ll die.”

“But little girl, there are miles and miles of beach with starfish all along the way, you can’t possibly make a difference.”

The little girl bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it lovingly back into the ocean past the breaking waves, “It made a difference to that one.” She replied.

We are all gifted

1. Reading by Children

Reading by Children

Reading by children at any age is a key ingredient to success in lifetime learning. Nationally 2/3rds of 4th grade students read below grade level. Kids read less today and parents read less to their children today because of all of the distractions from television, the internet, Gameboys, etc. Anything you can do to inspire children to read more and to inspire parents to read more to children will be very beneficial.

Possible Programs

  1. A reading contest for children where prizes are purchased and for each book read a child gets a chance to win a prize, coordinated with a local children’s library.
  2. Simply research and print the importance of reading by children with suggestions for parents, grandparents and children to increase reading and distribute this information widely in the community.
  3. Distribute children’s books to children who have none – to encourage reading.
  4. Organize a reading program for children in a certain grade or within a chosen school.
